“I found scenes in the Oval Office last Friday, and the way in which Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy was treated, deeply disturbing. We are at a crucial moment that will shape the future of our continent for generations to come. Now, more than ever, we must stand resolutely with Ukraine and send a clear message to President Trump about the importance of defending freedom and democracy in Europe.

“I welcome the Prime Minister’s statement on Monday and, together with my fellow Liberal Democrat MPs, I support the Government’s commitment to leading international efforts to support Ukraine. Bringing together Ukraine, our European allies and Canada to work towards a just peace that protects Ukraine’s sovereignty and security is vital – not just for Ukraine, but for our own national security.

“The Prime Minister’s plan for British troops to act as peacekeepers alongside our allies, in the event of a ceasefire, is an important step in deterring further Russian aggression and ensuring stability in the region. It is right that Europe takes the lead in securing peace on our continent, with Britain playing a key role.

“However, to be successful this effort must have reliable US backing. Recent comments from the US administration on peacekeeping in Ukraine are deeply concerning. I urge the Prime Minister to continue to remind President Trump and his team why supporting Ukraine is in the US’s interests. But we cannot afford to be complacent - Europe must become more self-sufficient in its own defence. The UK must commit to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2027 and reaching 3% as soon as possible.

“I would also like to see the Prime Minister go further and commit to working with our European allies to implement the Liberal Democrat’s proposals for a new rearmament bank and for seizing the tens of billions of pounds-worth of Russian assets to support Ukraine.

“As I said last week, Yeovil has an important role to play in strengthening the UK’s defence industry. I was pleased to receive confirmation from the Government that the new defence investment will be used to maximise jobs, growth, and innovation in the UK. I am now awaiting a response from the Defence Department to my request for a meeting on ensuring that businesses in Yeovil continue to play a key role in our national defence.

“I will continue to push for strong, sustained support for Ukraine, for a robust UK defence policy, and for investment that benefits both our national security and our local economy.”
