Adam Dance, MP for Yeovil, has welcomed positive updates regarding Leonardo’s bid for the New Medium Helicopter (NMH) programme, following recent Parliamentary Questions and discussions with Government ministers.

Speaking after meeting Ben Clarke, Unite’s convenor at Leonardo in Yeovil, Adam reiterated his commitment to supporting the Home of British Helicopters.

“It was a pleasure to meet Ben and discuss the incredible work being done at Leonardo. We both share a passion for supporting this vital employer in Yeovil and ensuring its success for the benefit of the local economy and the wider South West region.”

Adam highlighted the Government’s positive response to his letter seeking assurances on the NMH programme. Recent answers to Parliamentary Questions confirm that:

  • There are no plans to change the NMH competition now that Leonardo is the sole bidder.
  • The evaluation and approval process of Leonardo’s bid is already underway, with a contract award anticipated in 2025.
  • This progress is not contingent on Defence Expenditure reaching 2.5% of GDP.

“These assurances are encouraging news for Leonardo and the people of Yeovil. The Government’s commitment to the NMH programme demonstrates confidence in the capabilities and expertise of Leonardo’s workforce,” Adam said.

Adam has been actively championing Leonardo’s role in Yeovil, including opening its new logistics facility in September. He emphasised the importance of the company’s continued investment and skilled workforce to the region. “Leonardo is at the heart of our community, and its success brings economic benefits across Yeovil and beyond. My fellow Liberal Democrat MPs and I will continue to keep the pressure on the Government to ensure this vital contract is delivered.”

Adam concluded, “As we move towards 2025, I pledge to do everything I can to support a successful contract award. The NMH programme is not just about helicopters—it’s about jobs, innovation, and securing Yeovil’s place as a leader in the aerospace industry.”
