Adam Dance MP launches ‘Buy Somerset, Back Britain’ campaign to support local businesses and farmers

Adam Dance, MP for Yeovil, has joined forces with fellow Liberal Democrat MPs across Somerset to launch a new ‘Buy Somerset, Back Britain’ campaign. The campaign urges residents to back local businesses, farmers and high street shops in the wake of Donald Trump’s damaging trade tariffs on UK exports.
The call to action follows news that the US President is set to impose tariffs of up to 25% on British automotive exports and 10% on other goods—a move which could wipe up to 1% off the UK’s GDP and deliver a major blow to small businesses and producers already under strain.
Adam Dance MP, who regularly meets with businesses and farming communities in Yeovil and South Somerset, said the region must not be left to shoulder the cost of another trade shock.
Adam Dance, Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil, said:
“People in Yeovil and South Somerset are rightly worried about what these tariffs could mean for their livelihoods. From our local farm gates to our high streets, the risk of being undercut or priced out is real.
“That’s why I’ve launched the ‘Buy Somerset, Back Britain’ campaign, alongside my fellow Liberal Democrat MPs here in Somerset. It’s about encouraging everyone to back local - whether that’s our brilliant small businesses, independent shops, or the hard-working farmers who keep food on our tables.
“I’ve spoken to dozens of farmers at my regular farming forums and on visits around South Somerset. They want to compete - but fairly. They shouldn’t be sold out in trade deals that favour cheap imports over quality British produce.
“The Government must urgently support small businesses by scrapping its damaging jobs tax, reforming business rates, and ensuring any trade deals protect UK standards and jobs. Warm words aren’t enough—we need action.”
The campaign also highlights concern over proposed UK-US trade talks that could see tariffs cut on imported US beef, pork and chicken—threatening to undercut British farmers, just as previous Conservative trade deals with Australia and New Zealand have done.
As part of the ‘Buy Somerset, Back Britain’ campaign, Adam Dance MP will continue championing local produce, visiting independent shops, and pushing in Parliament for real investment in Somerset’s rural economy.
