Adam Dance MP Emphasises the Importance of Sexual Health Week
Adam Dance MP has today spoken out on the significance of Sexual Health Week, underlining the critical role that education, awareness, and accessible services play in ensuring the wellbeing of individuals across the country. Sexual Health Week, running from Monday 9th September - Sunday 15th September, offers an invaluable opportunity to promote open conversations, tackle stigma, and encourage everyone to prioritise their sexual health.
Adam Dance MP, who was the Lead Member for Public Health on Somerset Council from 2022 - 2024, emphasised the need for comprehensive sexual education in schools, reliable access to sexual health services, and greater awareness of the many factors that contribute to sexual wellbeing—including consent, contraception, and sexual health testing.
“Sexual health is a vital part of overall health and wellbeing,” he said. “It’s about ensuring that every individual has the information and resources they need to make informed choices. Sexual Health Week is an essential moment to remind us all of the importance of sexual health education, and to challenge the stigma that can prevent people from seeking the help they need.”
Adam Dance expressed particular concern about rising rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the barriers many face in accessing timely and affordable sexual health services, especially among young people and marginalised communities.
“Sexual Health Week serves as a reminder that we must continue to break down the barriers to accessing services, from ensuring affordability and privacy to addressing the deep-rooted stigmas that can prevent people from seeking care. As policymakers, we must strive for an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can access the resources they need to protect their health.”
Adam Dance also called on the government to invest further in public health campaigns and improve funding for sexual health clinics across the UK, particularly in rural areas. He stressed the importance of ongoing support for campaigns that highlight issues like contraception and sexual consent.
“By equipping people with the right information and access to services, we can reduce STIs, unintended pregnancies, and promote healthy, respectful relationships. We owe it to the next generation to ensure that sexual health is treated as a priority.”
The MP concluded by encouraging all constituents to take the opportunity to learn more about the importance of sexual health in their lives.
